day 1: Intro to CrossFit

Holy shit! I loved it, hated it and want more!!

I arrived at CrossFit Costa Mesa about 25 minutes early to take a quick look around before my on-board class began. There were about 18 people spread out around the gym, all at various stages of the WOD. I couldn't help but notice one girl, Katie, who was struggling to finish her kipping pull ups on the thunder-dome. Not only was I impressed that she was able to complete 10 in a row, but that the trainers and every other member in the room were yelling words of support and encouragement. While waiting for Alec, the instructor/owner to arrive every staff member approached me and introduced themselves. They did a great job of making me feel really welcome.

My first impressions:
-Gym: clean, organized, spacious, large selection of equipment
-Staff: welcoming, friendly, helpful, attractive, and supportive
-Members: strong, friendly and supportive

Today's class started with Alec introducing himself & the training staff, a brief history about his gym, and a quick discussion about 'what is cross fit?'
After a short lesson on the fundamentals, the gloves came off and the fun began!!

On-Board WOD:
400 meter run
20 pull ups
30 push ups
40 sit ups
50 squats
400 meter run
The last 400 meter run killed me...and ate up my time...i finished my first WOD in 16:38..
..pathetic..
But i guess that leaves me with plenty of room for improvement...

One thing about the gym that bothered me was the smell of fumes from the woodworking/sign shop next door. After class I asked Alec if the fumes are always present. He explained that the shop doesn't open until after 9am and is usually closed by the time the evening classes begin, and assured me it's usually not so bad..
If it's an issue on Wednesday and Thursday; I might look into another gym...

Other than my quads killing me I feel great, and am looking forward to more pain!!

Tonight's Dinner:
steamed summer squash and zucchini
